This is typically the case for a commercial project.

Or take a more experimental, "prototype-style" approach, where you sometimes accept spending a bit too much time on it. This is typically the case for a project with artistic ambitions.

Of course, there are lots of shades of gray between these two schematic poles, but in the end, the goal is always to deliver something "good enough".

But, in my musical work, I have no given client, and therefore no budget either — which, paradoxically, encourages me to pour disproportionate amounts of time into it. The goal is to produce music that goes well beyond mere "good enough." It's more like a kind of quantum leap: music that is artistically accomplished, vibrant, and engaging (well, that's the ambition, at least).

The good news is that, in the end, there are still two ways to measure these efforts: by the time spent, and by the gut feeling.

A production made in successive phases :

For this track, "Babel #1," I have produced three versions:

First, a demo — "version 0." As is often the case, this was the most enjoyable version to produce, since the process was both fast and efficient. You readily accept a demo's flaws; precision doesn't matter much at this stage. Overall, it mainly serves to test and check the arrangements, refine them, and ultimately formulate a kind of artistic promise.

Then I made "version 1." In this version, the guitars were re-recorded, the takes carefully analyzed and mixed, and the whole thing considered ready to share with the world. However, I made a mistake: I worked directly from the demo, which I thought was solid enough to serve as a working base. I was wrong. Over time, its flaws became apparent to me, until I could no longer live with them.

Finally, "version 2," specifically meant to fix those flaws. To avoid repeating the same mistakes, I started from scratch, realizing fairly quickly that I could recycle NOTHING from the previous version : the transitions from one them to the next didn't work, as my recording technique had changed in the meantime.

I hardly dare tell you how much time I've spent on this track, because I'm (almost) ashamed of it.
To give you a sense of scale: if this work were ever to be paid for, it would need to bring in at least 10,000 $ to make any economic sense!

So, in the end, will the end justify the means?
It's still too early to say. Besides, who knows what this piece of music's life will, once it's out in the world?
Time will tell — but at the very least, I'll have the satisfaction of not having been stingy with my resources in service of something bigger than myself!

For now (while waiting for the recording and mixing to be finished), I invite you to compare the two versions and tell me whether it was worth it. Here's a passage just before the climax:

Version 1 :

Version 2 :

Reference works of art: did the end justify the means?

Beyond this personal project, the question "does the end justify the means?" is worth asking — and in fact, it's a classic one, especially in theater and movies.

I have an example to offer, to feed this reflection: a sequence from the film "Andrei Rublev," directed by Andrei Tarkovsky.

In this scene, we follow a young man who claims to his patron that he knows how to cast a bell (we're in the middle ages).
In truth, his late father was a bell-founder, but (SPOILER) he never taught him the craft. So the young man is faking it, gripped by a dizzying case of impostor syndrome — to the point that once the bell is cast and unmolded, testing its resonance triggers a breakdown of tears in him.
This is a moment of fundamental artistic truth, one that crystallizes, in a way, the essence of the film.
And it's also why, to achieve this outcome, the director manipulated his actor.

The two men knew each other from having worked together on an earlier film: "Ivan's Childhood."

At the time, the actor was a child performer and had done excellent work.
